Awaiting file
The status of a step on hold waiting for a file (proof, revision, artwork approval), with the reason, the file requested and the person responsible declared.
Board
The rigid core of the box, measured in millimetres of thickness. In magnetic boxes the base and the shell can have different thicknesses.
Crease
The fold line made by the die without cutting; it is drawn separately from the cut.
Cutting die
The tool with cutting and creasing rules that cuts and creases paper or board. The die register stops you ordering two the same.
Cutting time
The plotter's machine time, calculated from the DXF with the machine's speeds.
Delivery note
The transport document that travels with the delivery; in Cartis it sits alongside carrier and tracking on every shipment.
DXF
Vector drawing format used by CAD systems and plotters. Its units and scale must be checked before use.
Flat layout
The flat drawing of a piece, paper or board, before it is folded and assembled.
Foam insert
The soft insert with cavities for the product; cut on the plotter from the DXF, with the sheet and the cutting grid.
Inner lid
The second, inner lid in four-piece boxes.
Job costing
The numbers once the job is closed: good, rejected and reworked pieces, actual costs and consumption.
Liner paper
The paper that lines the inside of the box, white or black, and covers the turn-ins.
Lip
The step between base and lid, or between base and shell, that lets the box close. In Cartis it is calculated from the board thickness.
Magnetic box
A rigid box whose shell closes with magnets; single flap, double flap or double cover.
Metres of cutting rule
The total length of rule in a cutting die, the basis of its cost.
Neck
The inner piece that rises above the base and guides the lid, in four-piece boxes.
Nesting
The automatic arrangement of pieces on a sheet or slab to waste less material.
On hand, reserved, available
What is in stock, what is already assigned to a job, what is free. In Cartis they stay three separate numbers.
Overhang
How far the sleeve or the lid projects beyond the piece it holds.
Patch
The piece of paper added to cover or reinforce an area of the wrap; in tray & sleeve boxes it is a design choice.
Print layout
The arrangement of layouts on the printed sheet. Several variants of the same job can share one.
Quantity breaks
The quantity bands, each with its own unit price, within the same quotation.
Shaped insert
Board trays, cavities and dividers that hold the product inside the box.
Sheet layout
The arrangement of layouts on the paper or board sheet size, from which the yield is calculated.
Sheet yield
How many pieces fit on a sheet and how many sheets the run needs.
Sleeve
The outer, printed piece that the tray slides into, in tray & sleeve boxes.
Template
The layered sheet, at 1:1, on which the design studio lays out the print: cut paths, creases, safe area.
Tray
The wrapped base that slides into the sleeve, in tray & sleeve boxes.
Turn-in
The part of the paper that wraps over the edge of the board and is glued down on the inside.
Waste
The material left over after cutting, as a percentage of the sheet.
The words, on your own box.
In the demo you see them all at work: lip, turn-ins, yield and waste, calculated from three measurements.
